How to Use MCP to Bring Sales Research into Claude and ChatGPT
ยท AI for Sales
What the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is, why it matters for sales teams, and how to connect a sales research source like minesales.ai to Claude and OpenAI models step by step.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude, and models from OpenAI, connect to outside data sources and tools. For sales teams, it means you can ask an AI assistant questions about real, current account research, such as "which banks in India have open data platform opportunities", and get answers from your research source instead of the model's general knowledge.
This guide explains how MCP works, what sales teams use it for, and how to connect minesales.ai.
The problem MCP solves
General AI chat tools are good at writing and reasoning, but they do not know your accounts. They may have old or no information about a specific company, and they cannot see your pipeline. Copying research into a chat window works for one account but does not scale, and it is easy to paste the wrong thing.
MCP fixes this by letting the assistant call your data source directly, when it needs it, with the permissions you give it.
How MCP works
There are three parts:
- The MCP client: the AI app you use, such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code.
- The MCP server: a service that exposes tools, such as "search opportunities" or "get decision makers".
- The tools: actions the assistant can call. Each tool has a name, a description and inputs.
When you ask a question, the assistant decides which tool to call, sends the inputs, reads the result and writes the answer. You see which tools were called.
What sales teams use MCP for
- Account research on demand: "Summarise the opportunities at this account and who owns them."
- List building: "Find company accounts in logistics in Germany with supply chain visibility problems."
- Call preparation: "List the decision makers for this account and the pain point each one owns."
- Outreach drafting: "Draft a first email to the CFO based on the top opportunity."
- Pipeline questions: "Which accounts in my pipeline have opportunities related to cloud cost?"
Because the assistant reads current research, its answers are grounded in real data rather than guesses.
The minesales.ai MCP server
minesales.ai provides a read-only MCP server that gives AI assistants access to researched opportunities, company accounts and decision makers.
Endpoint: https://api.minesales.ai/functions/v1/mcp
Authentication: your minesales.ai API key, sent as Authorization: Bearer <your key>. Create one in Settings, then API. See API and MCP.
Tools:
| Tool | What it returns |
|---|---|
search_opportunities | Opportunities from all researched companies |
search_company_accounts | Company accounts from all researched companies |
get_account_decision_makers | Decision makers of an account you unlocked |
get_account_opportunities | All opportunities of an account you unlocked |
search_my_opportunities | Opportunities from your own business profiles |
search_my_company_accounts | Company accounts from your own business profiles |
get_my_account_decision_makers | Decision makers of one of your own accounts |
get_my_account_opportunities | All opportunities of one of your own accounts |
The search tools return a company_account_id for each account, which the per-account tools use.
How to connect minesales.ai to Claude Code
Run this in your terminal, with your own key:
claude mcp add --transport http minesales https://api.minesales.ai/functions/v1/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer ms_live_YOUR_API_KEY"
Or add it to your project's .mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"minesales": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://api.minesales.ai/functions/v1/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${MINESALES_API_KEY}" }
}
}
}
Set MINESALES_API_KEY in your environment so the key is not stored in the file.
How to connect minesales.ai to Claude Desktop
Add this to your claude_desktop_config.json (Claude Desktop needs Node.js installed for npx):
{
"mcpServers": {
"minesales": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://api.minesales.ai/functions/v1/mcp", "--header", "Authorization:${AUTH_HEADER}"],
"env": { "AUTH_HEADER": "Bearer ms_live_YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
}
}
Restart Claude Desktop and the minesales tools will appear.
How to use it with the Claude API and OpenAI models
If you build your own sales tools, you can pass the minesales.ai MCP server to the Claude Messages API through its MCP connector, or to OpenAI models through the Responses API as a remote MCP tool. Both take the server URL and your API key as a header. The mcp page in Settings, then API, Documentation, shows the exact request for each.
Tips for better answers
- Use exact terms. Search filters match words in the data, so "banking, bank, financial services" finds more than "banks". The assistant can send several terms separated by commas.
- Ask for a small number first. "Show the top 10" is faster and cheaper than "show everything".
- Unlock key accounts first. Decision makers and full opportunity lists for public accounts need an unlock in the app.
- Ask the assistant to cite the account. This makes it easy to open the same account in minesales.ai.
Cost and security
- MCP needs an active paid plan.
- Tools are billed per 10 records returned, rounded up. Empty results and errors are free. See Credits and plans.
- The server is read-only. It cannot change your data.
- Treat your API key like a password. Store it in an environment variable and revoke it in Settings if it is exposed.
Key takeaways
- MCP lets AI assistants call outside data sources and tools directly.
- For sales, it grounds AI answers in real account research instead of general knowledge.
- minesales.ai provides a read-only MCP server for opportunities, accounts and decision makers.
- You can connect it to Claude Code, Claude Desktop, the Claude API and OpenAI's Responses API with an API key.
Frequently asked questions
What is MCP in AI?
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data. An MCP server exposes tools, and an MCP client such as Claude calls them when it needs information.
Can ChatGPT use MCP servers?
OpenAI supports remote MCP servers as tools in its Responses API, so you can use the minesales.ai MCP server with OpenAI models in your own apps.
Is MCP safe for sales data?
MCP is as safe as the server and keys you use. The minesales.ai server is read-only, uses your personal API key, and only returns data your plan and unlocks allow.
Do I need to code to use MCP?
No. Claude Desktop and Claude Code need only a short configuration. Coding is only needed if you build your own app on the Claude or OpenAI API.
What can I ask Claude once minesales.ai is connected?
You can ask for opportunities by industry, country or pain point, list company accounts, get decision makers for accounts you unlocked, and draft outreach based on the research. For workflow ideas, see How to Connect minesales.ai MCP to Your Sales Workflow.
